It is no secret that we are all busy. To manage our ever-growing to-do lists, we attempt to prioritize, putting lesser concerns on the back burner. One of those “lesser” priorities is our health. But it shouldn’t be. If unchecked, your health can become your biggest roadblock. Below are ways that preventative health habits create business success:

Health Habit 1: Be Mindful of What You Eat

Getting a burger from a nearby fast food joint or eating a salty snack (hopefully yours) from the break room is quick and easy. While not so bad in moderation, these habits can be detrimental to your health over time. It also impacts creativity and focus, which are key to business success. While this isn’t groundbreaking information, most of us neglect our diet due to lack of time and money.  However, developing new eating habits does not have to a time consuming or expensive ordeal.  Here are a few eating hacks even the busiest professional can manage:

    1. Plan ahead. You’re already creating 4584309 to-do lists, why not make a meal plan? Write out specifically what you will eat throughout the week and what you need to prepare it.  Make sure to include beans and frozen vegetables.  These foods are cheap, filling and relatively easy to cook. Beans are also a great source of protein, providing a natural energy boost.
    2. Keep it simple. Choose simple meals that can be easily prepared and does disrupt your busy life. Crockpots are a fantastic way to prepare meals with minimal effort.  There are hundreds of easy recipes available,  many of which can be done overnight. Your meals do not have to pass Gordon Ramsey’s standards, just be balanced and (relatively) edible.
    3. Drink water. Proper hydration is crucial to optimal health.  It is also an easy step to neglect. Do not wait until you are feeling thirsty to grab a glass of H2O. Drink throughout the day, though how much can vary depending on the individual.  In addition to preventing severe health issues such as kidney failure, water can boost energy, making you more alert and efficient.

Health Habit 2: Maintain a Balanced Sleep Schedule

Sacrificing sleep to “get more done”  is a temporary fix with long-term consequences.  Over time poor sleep habits can lead to “obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality.” Your business may be able to survive a lot of things, but your death is most likely not one them. It is also important to note that the amount of sleep can vary depending on the person. The key is to get quality sleep and to remain consistent.

Health Habit 3: Make Time For Exercise

There is no way around it. Exercise is one of the best ways to stay healthy. The benefits are numerous, from weight loss to increased brain function. You can reap these benefits with as little as 20 minutes a day and can even break it up into 10-minute increments. Who can’t spare 10 minutes to boost their health and further their success?

Health Habit 4: Keep That Doctor’s Appointment

As stated throughout this post, lack of time can cause us to push a lot to the side. Doctor visits are typically low on the priority list, especially if you are not currently sick. However, as the old adage goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Do not put off that yearly check up simply because you do not have “time.” There is nothing more heartbreaking than to have a preventable illness ruin your company’s progress.

Being healthy ensures that you perform at your best. When neglected, the consequences can be disastrous for you and your company.
