Happiness At Work

In an ideal world, each of us would have a job that makes us excited to get up in the morning. The sort of job that is so fulfilling that you would do for free (though, why on Earth would you?). While you should pursue work that you love, it may not always be possible. In the meantime,  here are four ways you can improve you happiness at work today:

Let go of what you cannot control.

Have an annoying co-worker? An overbearing boss? A coffee machine that never seems to work when you need it? Let it go. Remind yourself that you have no ability to change these things and the best thing you can do is adjust your reaction to them. It is not always easy and will definitely be difficult in the beginning. Try visualization or deep breathing whenever you feel anxious or upset. Remind yourself that the only thing you are responsible for is you.

Acknowledge all of your accomplishments, big or small.

We are all prone to minimize or dismiss our accomplishments, especially if we believe we could be doing more. Although it is great to strive for improvement, it is necessary to recognize our achievements. Taking time to appreciate these small wins builds confidence and prepares us for the big victories. Create a list of every prideful moment. Helped secure a big client? Put it on the list. Wrote an email that would put Shakespeare to shame? Add it.  Keep the list nearby as a constant reminder of how far you have already come.

Incorporate one new strategy or method in your daily workflow.

Boredom is one of the most effective joy-killers. Going to a job, day in and day out, with no change and nothing to look forward to is immensely draining. It is particularly easy to fall into this rut if you have a process-driven job. Avoid 9 to 5 fatigue by adding new and interesting tactics to your work. It can be something as simple as changing the step order. This keeps your mind engaged and minimizes the drudgery of routine.

Smile. Even if you don’t mean it.

Whether it’s due to personal issues or you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, there are days where you feel anything but happy. On days like this, try smiling.  The act of smiling releases dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, all neurotransmitters that boost your mood. Sometimes the best way to be happy at work is to just fake it until you make it.
